ABMB

ABMB completed the conceptual design for the reconstruction of the existing urban interchange to improve access along US 61 and into downtown Natchez, Mississippi. This project included an evaluation of the traffic congestion at the intersection of US 61 and Devereux Road in Natchez.  ABMB developed alternatives to reduce congestion and brought them to the public in a public hearing. After selection of the final alternative, we developed detailed design plans providing a two-lane flyover bridge for southbound traffic and modifications to the existing intersection and to current lane configurations. New signalization will be provided and connections to the frontage road will be improved. Because of the complexity of the design and the number of new alignments in the plans, ABMB conducted project development meetings with MDOT Roadway and District personnel to ensure that the final plans are easily readable and meet the MDOT’s needs.

After completing the property surveys, ABMB determined that the property adjacent to both sides of US 61 in the vicinity of the proposed interchange was owned by the Natchez Trace Parkway.  Design considerations had to be altered and revised concepts developed to adequately minimize impacts to the Parkway. These contextual solutions allowed MDOT to proceed with the project under a Categorical Exclusion and with a di minimus 4(f) instead of an Environmental Assessment and traditional 4(f) Statement. The project is currently under construction.
